Campaign for retired journalists' welfare

BHOPAL: The Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) has organised a six-day `K Ramarao Patrakar Pranraksha Abhiyan' from Sevagram in Wardha to Rajghat to draw Government's attention to those journalists who took part in the freedom struggle.

The unique drive-through campaign was a brainchild of IFWJ secretary Ramgopal Sharma .

``It began on November 9, which was K Ramarao's birth anniversary. At the beginning, the approximately 100-strong group included scribes, politicians, litterateurs, poets, members of voluntary organisations and trade unions'' he said.

``Later, our objective widened to include benefits for younger persons who cover terrorism for print and electronic media. They do their duty paying scant regard to their lives and are sometimes injured or killed. Anti-socials, such as underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, target investigative journalists,'' retired Madhya Pradesh Police officer and eminent poet Hari Vitthal Dubey, who was among the participants, said.

He provided the example of Sahara Samay cameraman Muzzafar Ahmad Bhat who sustained a gunshot wound in the stomach while shooting a July 29 encounter with militants at Srinagar's Lal Chowk. - UNI
