Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has left it to its chief Prakash Singh Badal to select the nominee who will head the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) for the next one year. This decision was taken in the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting of the SAD held here today. The meeting was presided over by Mr Badal. The annual elections of the SGPC president and its office bearers and the 11-member executive would be held on November 23 at Amritsar. The decision of the PAC was on expected lines as last year and even before that the SAD leadership has been leaving the selection of the SGPC chief to Mr Badal. The SAD chief is scheduled to address a meeting of SGPC members belonging to his party at Amritsar tomorrow to solicit their views on the SGPC chief's issue. The name of the person to head the coveted post would be kept a closely guarded secret and would only be announced in the SGPC general house on November 23 when the elections commence. It remains to be seen whether the SAD chief will give the present incumbent Bibi Jagir Kaur or find another person to repalce her. There is tremondous pressure on Mr Badal to remove Bibi Jagir Kaur in view of a criminal case pending against her in a Patiala court. In case Mr Badal decides to remove the Bibi, then the front-runner to the post is the soft-spoken and stauch Badal-loyalist Prof Kirpal Singh Bhadungar who has held this post twice in the past. Others in the run are former ministers Sucha Singh Langah and Sewa Singh Sekhwan, both members of the SGPC from Gurdaspur district. In the 190-member SGPC General House, the SAD has 152 members. -- UNI
