Volcker: Left may demand discussion

Special Correspondent

Keen on expansion of probe

NEW DELHI: Left parties on Monday indicated that they would demand a discussion on the Volcker Committee Report and expansion of the probe to include deals by companies and others named in the document.

The parties were keen that the probe ordered by the Centre included the companies named in the report, especially since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was in power at the time the contracts were concluded.Left leaders signalled their intent at a dinner meeting hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. The meeting concluded the engagements the Speaker has had with various political parties over the three days ahead of the winter session of Parliament starting on Wednesday.

The Left parties, along with the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal, assured full cooperation to Mr. Chatterjee in running the House smoothly.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker hosted a lunch for the allies of the United Progressive Alliance. Mr. Chatterjee has met leaders of the Opposition NDA and the Congress during the last two days and would have an all-party meet on Tuesday.

Among the leaders who attended the dinner meeting were Basudeb Acharya (Communist Party of India-Marxist), Gurudas Dasgupta (Communist Party of India), Ram Gopal Yadav (Samajwadi Party) and Ajit Singh (Rashtriya Lok Dal).
