Autorickshaw fare increased

Staff Reporter

Decision taken at a meeting of Transport officials and unions

HYDERABAD : The Government has increased the minimum tariff for autorickshaws from the existing Rs. 8 for the first 1.6 km to Rs.10. The charge for every subsequent km has been hiked to Rs. 5.60 from the existing Rs. 4.60 per km.

Following the hike, autorickshaw drivers in twin cities have put off their proposed indefinite strike.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Transport Department officials with various autorickshaw unions. Transport Minister Kanna Laxminarayana was also present.

Panel on other issues

Auto Drivers' Struggle Committee and Auto Drivers' Aikya Karyacharana Samiti leaders Mohammed Amanullah Khan and A. Ravishankar said the Government had constituted a committee to study their demand to allow ten children in an autorickshaw.

He said the committee would comprise Joint Transport Commissioner, DCP (traffic) and four members of autorickshaw drivers' unions.

A survey would be conducted and the report submitted to the Government within a month, they said.

On the other demands like allowing registration of autorickshaws in Ranga Reddy district and abolition of computerised examination for licence, Mr. Ravishankar said the Government assured the unions of solving the problems soon.

He said the Government also promised the unions to look into renewal of free insurance cover for autoraickshaw drivers.
