Sibal for steps to protect biodiversity

Special Correspondent

Mining, tourism and travel among the sectors exploiting nature

  • Human intervention should not harm nature
  • World community yet to wake up to degradation of natural resources
  • Private sector is the key to protection of biodiversity

NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal has advocated in-built legal checks to prevent degradation of the ecosystem in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of a national conclave on the `Role of the Private Sector in Convention on Biodiversity' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the Ministries of Science and Technology and Environment and Forests, Mr. Sibal said that human intervention should not harm nature.

"Our actions are going to impact the lives of generations to come," he said and pointed out that the main sectors exploiting nature were mining, agriculture, tourism, transportation, travel and pharmaceuticals. These caused damage to natural resources, loss of habitat and lead to confrontation with nature.

To check this, Mr. Sibal suggested that access to land and natural resources, finances and to market and human capital should be allowed only if it is ensured that what is taken from nature is returned to it.

Minister of State for Environment and Forests N.N. Meena said the role of the private sector in the implementation of the convention was crucial.
