Spotting promising youngsters, encouraging them and offering them new avenues to work and exhibit their talent are all important responsibilities that institutions promoting art have to undertake with single-minded devotion. The first Kashi Award for Visual Art (KAVA I), instituted by Kashi Art Gallery, serves this purpose of supporting young artists in the initial phase of their career. The three winners were George Martin P.J. (New Delhi), Prajakta Palav (Mumbai) and T. Ratheesh (Thiruvananthapuram). Mr. Martin, hailing from Angamaly in Ernakulam district, has already participated in some international projects. Ms. Palav has held her solo in Mumbai and Mr. Ratheesh has participated in an exhibition in England. The awards were presented by noted sculptor N.N. Rimzon at Kashi Art Gallery a few days ago and a show featuring the winners' works was also organised. The winners were selected from almost 100 applicants from across India who had completed their BFA, MFA or equivalent course during the last five years. The will of the artists to establish themselves was also a major consideration. A panel comprising senior artists Akhilesh, Anant Joshi, Bose Krishnamachari, Lanny DeVunno, Rekha Rodwittiya and Suresh Jayaram selected the winners. The show will be on till November 27, at Kashi Art Gallery, Mattancherry.
