This Day That Age
The Soviet Prime Minister, Mr. Nikolai Bulganin, and the Soviet Communist Party First Secretary, Mr. Khrushchev, addressing the members of both Houses of Parliament in the Central Hall on November 21, offered to share the "economic and scientific experiences of Soviet Russia" with India for peaceful development. Explaining the foreign policy of his country, Mr. Bulganin stressed that Russia had always stood for peace and disarmament and complete prohibition of atomic and hydrogen weapons. He paid a tribute to the contribution made by India in the same direction. In his speech, Mr. Khrushchev declared, "We are not rarely accused of trying to export the ideas of Communism to other countries. But we have never compelled anybody and are not compelling anybody to accept our ideas of reconstruction of society." The statement was received with thunderous ovation from the MPs and other distinguished visitors. Both Mr. Bulganin and Mr. Khrushchev emphasised that it was Prime Minister Nehru's visit to Soviet Russia that had resulted in considerably strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two countries. In a brief introductory speech, the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, paid tributes to the progress made by Russia since the days of the October Revolution. He emphasised that if peace were to be established in the world it was not merely essential to pay lip homage to Panch Shila, but to implement it in the proper spirit.
