This Day That Age
In the Madras Legislative Council on November 21, Mr. T. Purushotham asked the Government whether it had considered the question of acquiring Sri Subramanya Bharathi's house in Triplicane and establishing there a library containing his works. Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, Minister for Agriculture, answering for the Minister for Education, said the question of acquisition of the house alone was considered in 1949-50 and the proposal was dropped. Mr. Purushotham asked if the Government would consider at least the question of remitting the proposal to the Madras Local Library Authority for starting a national library in that house with State help if need be. The Minister said he was unable to understand the suggestion of the member. He said Bharathi had lived in many rented houses in the city. It was, therefore, not possible to find one house and make it a memorial.
