A date with graphic arts guru

In France, Enki Bilal is the hallmark of some of the most powerful and original work done in graphic arts. His books are hugely popular and have been made into three cinema super productions: `Tykho Moon', `Bunker Palace Hotel' and `Immortal'. His work is well known and keenly followed for its social and political commitment. Speaking about what inspires him and what contributes to creating the fascinating array of work, Enki says: "A lot of inspiration for my work comes from life around me. I am fascinated with the past which is our memory, our present which is where we make all our mistakes, and our future which is where we can bring about some change -- you could say that I am obsessed with this relationship." The artist is now in Delhi with his exhibition, "Enki Bilal in India", at Galerie Romain Rolland in Alliance Francaise de Delhi from November 23 to December 11.

Enki, in India as everywhere else in the world, is already a reference for graphists, comic book editors and graphic novelists and his current exhibition is an opportunity to look at his many facets in a multi-facets country that can well reflect the inordinate dimensions of his art.

Also, one can catch the film screening at Alliance Francaise de Delhi auditorium from November 23 to 25. Speaking about Indian cinema and how it is among the most interesting industries in the world, Enki adds: "It would be fascinating to look at some sort of collaboration, but for that we would need to work around our differences." -- Bindu Shajan Perappadan
