BJP supports move to remove encroachments on Kolleru

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party has supported the Government's decision to dismantle encroachments on the Kolleru Lake and wants it to ensure that GO 120 is implemented in toto by officials at all levels.

State BJP president N. Indrasena Reddy, vice-president S.V. Seshagiri Rao and general secretary K. Laxman said the Government should take action to restore the lake to its pristine form, as encroachments had done colossal damage to the environment. The lake must be protected, whoever may be involved in the encroachments, they said.

Referring to the `Jalayagnam' programme that aims to complete 28 irrigation projects at a cost of Rs. 46,000 crores, they said most of the Telangana projects were lift schemes, which require 2,900 mw of power on a permanent basis.

However, there was no clarity on the part of the Government on this issue. The BJP leaders wanted Government commitment on providing hydel power to Telangana projects by constituting a permanent mechanism.
