Depression in Bay weakens

CHENNAI:
After generating heavy spells over the coastal parts of the State in the last two days, the depression weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area on Tuesday night and lay over the Gulf of Mannar. On Monday night, it lay centred about 200 km east southeast of Pamban. Subsequently, the system moved in a westerly direction.
According to the weather office, many places of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry are likely to receive rainfall.
Squally weather with strong wind speed reaching 50 to 55 kmph is also likely along and off Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry coast.
As the state of sea will be rough to very rough, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea, the bulletin says.
During the 24-hour-period that ended at 8-30 a.m. on Tuesday, many places of the State received heavy rainfall. Parangipettai registered 22 cm followed by Chidambaram - 13 cm, and Cheyyur - 11 cm. Cuddalore, Thirumayam, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Aranthangi received 10 cm each while Tambaram, Thiruvallur, Orathanadu, Thanjavur, Sirkazhi and Muthupet recorded 8 cm each. Meenambakkam registered 7 cm and Nungambakkam 4 cm.
The Coast Guard, in a press release, said it had taken preventive measures to ensure the safety of mariners and fishermen at sea. Its rescue teams, ships and aircraft had been put on high alert.
