Left wins Thiruvananthapuram

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Dealing another blow to the Congress-led United Democratic Front in Kerala, the Left Democratic Front candidate on Tuesday romped home in the by-election to the Lok Sabha from the constituency that encompasses the State capital. Pannian Ravindran of the Communist Party of India defeated V.S. Sivakumar of the Congreess by a margin of 74,200 votes.

The BJP candidate lost his deposit. He suffered a severe depletion of votes compared to the number polled by the party candidate in the previous election.

This victory of the LDF, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is the fourth in a series, the earlier rounds being the Lok Sabha elections of 2004 in which the UDF drew a blank in the State; two by-elections to the Assembly; and the local body elections in September 2005. Assembly elections are due early next year. The by-election followed the death of CPI leader P.K. Vasudevan Nair.
