Datta Jayanti from December 13

CHIKMAGALUR: Datta Jayanti will be celebrated for three days in Chikmagalur district from December 13, C.T. Ravi, MLA and president of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha has said. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, he said a "Datta Peeta Satya Sandesha Jatha" will be organised from M.C. Halli in Tarikere taluk from November 28 to make the people aware of the "facts of Datta Peeta". Motorcycle jathas will be organised in Koppa, Sringeri and N.R. Pura on November 29 and 30 and December 1. He said jathas from different parts of the district will reach here on December 4 and a public meeting held.

Panchappa Kalburgi

resigns from BJP

BIJAPUR: Panchappa Kalburgi, a leader of farmers, has resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was also a member of party's State Executive. Before the last Assembly elections, he resigned from the Janata Dal (United) to join the BJP. In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Kalburgi said he was disillusioned with the BJP as there is no scope for new entrants to speak on issues related to farmers at party fora. — Staff Correspondent

Award for The Hindu correspondent

BANGALORE: T.V. Sivanandan, Special Correspondent of The Hindu in Gulbarga, has been selected for the annual award for development journalism instituted by the Government for 2005. The Government on Tuesday announced the annual environment journalism and development journalism awards for four years from 2002. Each award carries a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, a memento and a citation.

Indonesia calls for

Bangalore: Indonesia on Tuesday urged India to utilise opportunities in bilateral trade in the oil and energy sectors. "While Indian imports are already entering Indonesia, good marketing is necessary to sell these products," Abunzal Bakrie, Coordinating Minister for External Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, said. Caveat filed on

action in Belgaum

BANGALORE: The State Government on Tuesday filed a caveat in the Karnataka High Court on the supersession of the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC). Although the caveat application was readied on Monday, it could be filed in the Registry of the High Court only on Tuesday. The caveat has been filed to pre-empt any ex parte orders being obtained against the supersession. Now the Government will have to be heard before any order is passed. — Staff Reporter

Betting racket:

nine arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli police have detected a cricket-betting racket in the city and arrested nine bookies. Cases have been booked against the accused at the Hubli Town Police Station. According to police sources, the accused along with others completed transactions worth Rs. 3 crores during the India-South Africa one-day match in Bangalore on Saturday.

Bangalore: Former Bihar Governor M. Rama Jois has congratulated the people of that State for "giving a clear verdict against caste and communal pollution of politics and in favour of secularism". LPG cylinders seized

HASSAN: The police raided a house in Konanur Town of Arkalgud taluk and seized 85 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders that were being stored illegally.

According a release from Superintendent of Police Panduranga H. Rane, the taluk police and Arkalgud tahsildar raided the house of K.S. Manjunath on Monday and seized LPG cylinders and stoves. — Staff Correspondent

Teak logs confiscated

HASSAN: The mobile squad of the Forest Department stopped a truck near Angadihalli village of Belur taluk which was allegedly transporting teak illegally and seized logs worth Rs. 75,000, according to a release from the Forest Department.

Bidar: The BJP Minority Morcha's district-level workers rally will be held in Bidar on November 25. State unit president Mir Bahadur Hussein, the Maharashtra State general secretary Pasha Patel, district president Prakash Khandre, State unit vice-president K.B. Shanappa, General secretary Raghunath Malkapure, minority morcha leaders such as Mohammad Zaheeruddin and others will participate, a release said.

Camp for cattle

Bidar: Experts from the Veterinary University examined at least 400 cattle at a free camp in Hippalgaon in Aurad taluk on Monday. Medicines were distributed on the spot and surgeries were referred to the university's hospital. Vice-Chancellor R.N. Srinivas Gowda distributed prizes for the best-bred buffaloes and oxen. Canara Bank, Milk Producers Society of Hippalgaon, and the Department of Animal Husbandry organised the camp, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Seminar on Dalit issues

Bidar: Experts on Dalit issues and activists will discuss problems faced by members of the community at a State-level seminar in Bidar on Sunday.

The seminar will debate the setting up of a separate ministry for the development of Dalits at the Central and State levels, providing reservation for Dalits in the private sector, compulsory English education at primary level filling up of backlog vacancies, immediate payment of crop insurance, waiver of all loans issued through the SC/ST Development Corporation, and distribution of scholarships to SC/ST students, a release from the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti said. — Staff Correspondent

TCH examinations: fresh dates soon

BANGALORE: Fresh dates for the TCH examinations will be announced after the Supreme Court gives its verdict on a petition filed by the State Education Department to vacate a stay order issued on November 18 over the issue of reservation for the disabled. The postponement of the examinations scheduled for Sunday triggered Statewide protests. Minister for Primary and Secondary Education R. Ramalinga Reddy said a decision will be taken on November 22 in this regard. The Education Department maintained that it had tried to get the stay order vacated, but could not succeed. The district officials were then instructed to cancel the examination.

MANGALORE: Santhosh T. Soans, paediatrician, has been elected to represent Karnataka on the National Executive Board of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) for 2005-06.

Dr. Soans is the founder-president of IAP Intensive Care, Karnataka chapter, and coordinator of IAP Intensive Care, South India chapter, according to a press release from IAP.

BANGALORE: South Western Railway will run special trains on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between Bangalore and Satya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam, on the occasion of the 80th birthday celebrations of Sathya Sai Baba to clear the rush. Bangalore City-Sri Sathya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam special will leave Bangalore at 7.15 a.m. and reach Sai Nilayam at 11.15 a.m.

The special train will leave Sai Nilayam at 4 p.m. and reach Bangalore at 8 p.m.

The train will have six general second-class sitting/chair cars and one second-class sitting-cum-luggage van.

The train will have stop at Bangalore Cantonment, Yelahanka, Doddaballapur, Gouribidanur, Hindupur and Penukonda. — Special Correspondent

Blast victim dies

in hospital

MYSORE: Neelamma, who sustained burns in an explosion that rocked K.R. Nagar here on November 17, died of injuries in hospital here on Monday evening. With this, the death toll in the K.R. Nagar blast has gone up to two.

It may be recalled that Neelamma's husband Shankarappa was also killed in the explosion, which was attributed to a leak in the LPG cylinder. Three others had suffered minor injuries and all of them were admitted to K.R. Hospital here. The injured are recuperating.

Three held, goods recovered

MYSORE: The Udaygiri police have arrested three persons on the charge of theft and recovered electronic goods worth Rs. 33,000 from them.

The police said the arrested, Raheel Ahmed, Waseem and Nadeem, were involved in thefts reported in Mandi and Lashkar police station limits. The police said Raheel and Waseem were arrested on K.S. Ashwath Road when they were trying to sell stolen products, and Nadeem was arrested based on the confession of the two.

The police said they recovered five DVD players and seven mobile phones stolen from two shops recently, all worth over Rs. 33,000. The Udaygiri police have registered a case and are investigating. — Staff Correspondent

First-aid camp

MYSORE: Nanjangud Industries' Association and Directorate of Factories and Boilers, Mysore Division, will conduct a one-day camp on first-aid for small- and medium-scale industrial workers and supervisors on Wednesday.

Reservation sought

MYSORE: Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest here on Monday demanding 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.

They accused successive governments of dithering on the issue, though all political parties have accepted it "in principle."

Condemning the delay in introducing the Reservation Bill, the CPI (M) demanded that the Bill be tabled and passed in the winter session of Parliament. — Special Correspondent
