NEW DELHI: Jhulan Goswami tossed out England top order early on as India gained a position of strength despite the visitors making a late fight back on the second day of the four-day women's cricket Test match at the Jamia Ground here on Tuesday.

England was fighting to save the follow-on after having been reduced to 103 for seven in reply to India's first innings total of 289. But for Lancashire batter and vice-captain Arran Brindle, England's first innings was headed for an early close. Brindle and Rosalie Birch saved England the blushes as they took the visitors from a precarious 61 for six, to 99 before Jhulan brought an end to Brindle's resilience.

Right-arm medium pace bowler Jhulan bowled to the line and used her outswingers to good effect. England captain Charlotte Edwards, fellow opener Laura Newton and one down, Claire Taylor found Jhulan's pace too hot to handle. While Edwards and Newton's stumps were castled by Jhulan, Taylor walked out after edging to wicketkeeper Karuna Jain leaving England tottering at 25 for three. In her first spell of 10 overs, Jhulan had five maidens and gave just 12 runs.

With figures of four for 16, Jhulan bettered her previous best of three for 52, also against England, at Taunton.

In between, Rumeli Dhar made sure that English women were kept on the toes as she first trapped Jenny Gunn leg before wicket and then bowled Lydia Greenway to put India in control.

But Brindle and Brich, who came together after the fall of Laura Harper, delayed India's celebrations. England needs to score 139 to save follow-on.
