Records rain on opening day

BANGALORE: As many as 10 new marks were set on the opening day of the National School Games aquatics championship at the BAC Pool here on Tuesday.

The host, Karnataka led the way collecting 12 gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

National junior champion Rohit R. Hawaldar set the tone for Karnataka's gold rush, when he smashed the record in 1500m in the boys' Group I section, clocking 16:56.09 (OR: 17:11.69, Chetan Sharma, 2003). N.A. Sandeep of Karnataka bettered his own mark in the 100m back stroke in the boys' Group II section, clocking 1:02.29. The Karnataka relay squads also set new marks in the 4x100m freestyle relay (Group I) and 4x100m medley relay (Group III).

In the girls' section, V. Tejeswani, Prerna Jain and Shubha Chittranjan struck gold medals and kept the host ahead in the race for the team title.

Group II (u-17): 100m freestyle: K. Milan (Ker, 58.43); 100m back stroke: N.A. Sandeep (Kar, 1:02.29 NMR; OR: 1:05.19); 50m breast stroke: J. Agneshwar (TN, 33.22).

Group III (u-14): 100m freestyle: Ishan Ohale (Mah, 1:02.41); 100m breast stroke: S.R. Koushik (Kar, 1:17.54); 4x100m medley relay: Karnataka (4:39.73 NMR; OR: 4:39.75).

Girls: 800m freestyle: Tejeaswini (Kar 10:47.01NMR; OR: 10:18 13); 100m breast stroke: Prerna Jain (Kar, 1:22.77); 50m butterfly: Shubha C (Kar, 30.09 NMR; OR: 32:29); 4x100m freestyle: Karnataka (4:27.85).

Group II: 100m freestyle: B. Neeraja (Kar, 1:03.58); 100m back stroke: Faria Zaman (Asm, 1:11.15 NMR; OR: 1:12.41); 50m breast stroke: Monalisa Mondal (WB, 38.91).

Group III: 100m breast stroke: Poorva Shetty (Mah, 1:24.54 NMR; OR: 1:24.75); 4x100m medley relay: Karnataka (5:01.06 NMR; OR: 5:06.64); Diving: Boys: Group I: Chandrakumar Singh (Man, 358.50). Group II: 3m spring board: Krishna Naik (Mah, 291.35).

Girls: Group I: High Board: Neha (Mah, 236.95). Group II : 3m spring board: Karishma Mohite (Kar, 281.55).
