KANNUR: A gathering of families of Congress workers who lost their lives in political violence will be held at the Stadium Corner here at 5 p.m. on Thursday under the auspices of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Financial assistance mobilised by the KPCC would be disbursed among the families at the function, District Congress Committee (DCC) president Sunny Joseph said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

The function will be inaugurated by Congress Working Committee member A.K. Antony. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala will preside over the function.

State-level leaders of the party will also take part.

Mr. Joseph said over Rs.25 lakhs had been mobilised by the KPCC to be disbursed as financial assistance to the families of the `martyrs.' It included Rs.10 lakhs collected by Mr. Chennithala through `currency garlands' given to him by party workers during his `Chaithanya Yatra' a few months ago, Rs.5,000 each from party MLAs, Rs.10,000 each from party MPs from the State and Rs.300 each from party local body members.

He said party workers who had been handicapped following attacks on them would also be offered financial assistance.

The DCC president said the gathering was a follow-up to the `Civic rights protection convention' organised by the United Democratic Front with the objective of exposing political violence `sponsored' by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
