Bangalore: This market will be different. For one thing it will function only between 6 p.m. and midnight on Friday. The funds raised will help a hospice for advanced stage and terminally ill cancer patients. Karunasharya, the hospice on Airport Road, is organising this event with stalls selling a wide variety of specially crafted items ranging from artefacts to silver and costume jewellery, used books and game stalls which offer "Housie", music and food stalls. The people at Karunashraya say, "The Night Market will be a fun event to which everyone is welcome and we expect a large turnout of well wishers.'' Karunashraya hopes to make this a frequent event. The proceeds will be used for running the hospice which accommodates and provides palliative care for 50 cancer patients. Managing Trustee Kishore Rao says, "Karunashraya is a trust above all creeds and castes and seeks to give nursing and care to patients who are beyond cure.'' Till now Karunashraya has helped over 4,000 patients through their last days, to face death with dignity. Compassion, empathy and loving care are offered by nuns trained to handle terminally ill patients. It also has a home care service that reaches out to patients in their own homes and enables the families to cope with the situation. It trains nursing assistants for home care too. With the Night Market, Karunashraya aims to create a greater awareness of its activities, generate some funds and more importantly, change the perception of the hospice as a depressing, morbid place where people come when they have nowhere else to go.
