CHENNAI:
Veteran Carnatic musicians D.K. Pattammal and Lalgudi G. Jayaraman will be honoured with the "Gayana Samaja Centenary Award" at the centenary celebrations of the Bangalore Gayana Samaja at Narada Gana Sabha on Sunday.
Addressing presspersons, H. Kamalanath, president of the Samaja, said the Samaja, established in 1905, was one of the oldest cultural organisations promoting fine arts. Chennai was chosen as the venue for the centenary celebrations because of the organisation's close cultural ties with Tamil Nadu artistes and rasikas. The celebrations will be inaugurated by Governor of Maharashtra S.M. Krishna.
Besides sharing cherished memories with Chennai rasikas, the Samaja had decided to honour two veteran artistes based in Chennai at the celebrations.
Ms. Pattammal and Mr. Jayaraman had been associated with the Samaja for the past 50 years, Mr. Kamalanath pointed out.
The award includes a citation, memento and cash award of Rs. 20,000.
The award ceremony will be followed by a music concert of S. Sowmya. Mridangam artiste Vellore Ramabhadran, Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal and Carnatic vocalist R.K. Srikantan received the same award from President Abdul Kalam in Bangalore. Celebrations have been planned in Delhi, Hyderabad and Thanjavur and musicians honoured there too.
