Staff Reporter

Bid to modify cells for use in treating people with genetic disorders

CHENNAI: The Christian Medical College, Vellore, will start a stem cell research centre to join the global search for solutions in genetics to diseases.

President Abdul Kalam will lay the foundation stone for the centre at the CMC campus on December 1 and also deliver Founder's Day oration, named after Dr. Ida S. Scudder. "Stem cell applications to regenerate damaged cardiac muscle and treatment of diabetes mellitus will be the important objectives of the stem cell research," CMC Director George Chandy told presspersons on Tuesday.

The centre is being set up in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology.

CMC was selected to undertake transitional research (translating basic research into practical application during treatment) in view of the exciting potential of stem cells in combating diseases.

The centre will focus on the use of bone marrow and cord blood derived from adult stem cells for treatment of various conditions. Researchers will attempt to genetically modify these cells for possible use in treating people with genetic disorders.
