Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in parts of Gummidipoondi, Mathur and Ponneri areas on Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Saplings planted

The Lions Club of Keelkattalai and Rotary Club of Nanganallur organised a tree sapling planting around Tillai Ganga Nagar on Thursday. About 100 saplings were planted with tree guards.

Vael's Billabong High in Kabaleeshwar Nagar, Neelankarai, organised in house programmes including `Farm Day' and a puppet show on an underwater adventure for Children's Day. Children's day competitions

The JRS academy held several competitions for children between 3 and 12 years on November 12, 13 and 14. The prize distribution will be held on December 1 at the Kamakoti Kalyana Mandapam, Villivakkam, at 6.30 p.m. M.V. Muthuramalingam of the Vellammal Educational Trust will distribute the prizes. Nutritious food scheme for college students

The DRBCCC Hindu College, Pattabhiram, has started a nutritious food scheme for poor students and those who have to commute long distances. Around 100 students will benefit from the scheme.

IOB hikes interest on NRE deposits

The Indian Overseas Bank has hiked the interest rates on NRE term deposits, for one year to less than three years by 30 basis points, and for three years to less than five years by 20 basis points, with effect from Friday, November 18. The new rates, valid till November 30, are 5.5 per cent for one year to less than two years and 5.6 per cent for two years to less than five years.

Firemen recruitment postponed

The recruitment of 678 firemen for 2003-04 to be held at the RR Stadium for candidates who have applied for Chennai and St. Thomas Mount centres has been postponed to November 27 - 28 (Monday and Tuesday) because of the rain.

Call letters had been sent to candidates by post, a press release from the Tamilnadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board said. Candidates should report at Rajarathinam Stadium, Egmore at 6 a.m.

Mylapore school to

get a facelift

St Ebbas Girls Higher Secondary School at Mylapore is a revered institution in Chennai.

It has now embarked on a major building construction drive that will give a facelift to the school by way of new classrooms and laboratories, besides added facilities for students. In aid of this construction/ expansion activity, the school is organising a comedy play `Athisthakaran' by S Ve Sekar on December 1 (Thursday) at Music Academy, Cathedral Road, Chennai. Tickets are available on the school premises and also at Landmark (Nungambakkam & Spencers), Oddyssey (Adyar) and Music World (Spencers).
