Thiruvananthapuram: No major incident of violence was reported during the counting of votes for the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha by-election in the district on Tuesday. Police personnel had been deployed in strength at all the 11 counting centres, including the district collectorate at Vanchiyoor, from Monday night onwards to prevent any untoward incident. At Ithiyoor in Balaramapuram, the police defused a violent standoff between the activists of the United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front. The removal of a party flag had resulted in the altercation between the party workers. In Perumbazhuthoor in Neyyattinkara police station limits, persons suspected to be Bharatiya Janata Party workers, allegedly assaulted Harish, a CPI(M) sympathiser. SP, Rural S. Gopinath said a case has been registered on the basis of Harish's statement. The victim, a van driver, has been admitted to the Neyyattinkara taluk hospital with minor injuries. In the city, students owing allegiance to the Students Federation of India and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad clashed at Kesavadasapuram junction on Tuesday evening. Commissioner Manoj Abraham said the incident had nothing to do with the poll process. The standoff between the student factions was over a road traffic accident in which a college girl was injured.
