KOCHI: The night time operation of tipper lorries and JCB vehicles used for excavation has been banned in the district, according to the District Collector. The ban has been implemented in view of the measures being taken for curbing the unauthorised filling of paddy fields, smuggling of river sand and excavation of earth for filling purposes. The ban will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Special squads of police and the Regional Transport Office will conduct search for those violating the rule. The step is being taken based on the complaints being raised about the unauthorised excavation of earth for filling and the smuggling of river sand. Another aim is to prevent the loss of life due to careless driving. Local protection groups could also take part in the vigil along with the police and the RTO.The public has been requested to keep the local police station informed about the presence of such vehicles seen between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. In case the local police refuse to take action, the District Collector should be informed.
