This Day That Age
Marshal Nikolai Bulganin, Mr. Nikita Khrushchev and other Soviet leaders on November 22 visited the Bhakra Nangal project, the second highest dam in the world, under construction. They spent four hours driving in an open car round the project. Both Mr. Bulganin and Mr. Khrushchev not only evinced keen interest in every section they inspected but also revealed a sound knowledge of engineering and technical aspect of dam construction. They put a number of questions to the engineers and technicians who showed them round. "We are tremendously impressed by everything that we saw - not only the work that is being done but also the enthusiasm of the people," observed Mr. Bulganin, adding: "It reminds me of my own country in bygone days when we also started from scratch and had to seek the help of Americans and other advanced countries in our construction work." Mr. Khrushchev remarked: "This is India that is going to be." Chatting with an American engineer working in the project, they remarked, "You know, in early days, we also sought the help of American engineers and others. You must help India in every way so that she can learn and help others later." While "grand" and "marvellous" were the words used by the Soviet Prime Minister, Mr. Khrushchev looked at the Bhakra Dam site from the strategic point of view. He said, "It is being so located that even if things go wrong and India is subjected to bombardment, the dam or the power house will not be damaged."
