This Day That Age
Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Communist Party First Secretary, believes in looking before he sits down. At the scout camp which he and Mr. Bulganin visited in New Delhi on November 21, they were shown a "camp cot" improvised with ropes strung across four stout sticks driven into the ground. Prime Minister Nehru, who was with them, sat on the cot to test its strength - but without any untoward result. After Mr. Nehru had got up from the cot, the much-heavier Mr. Khrushchev decided to emulate him, but he was obviously prepared for the worst. Mr. Khrushchev had hardly thrown his full weight on the contraption when the "cot" collapsed, but it did not take the Soviet leader down with it. He was erect on his feet almost the same instant without losing either his dignity or his balance. Everyone including Mr. Khrushchev had a hearty laugh.
