Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The Chief Vigilance Officer and Development Commissioner of Pondicherry, B.V. Selvaraj, has stressed the need to eradicate corruption through sustained and concerted efforts on the part of all sections of people. Inaugurating a seminar on `Vigilance Awareness' organised by the Administrative Reforms Wing (ARW) of the Pondicherry Administration here on Wednesday, Mr. Selvaraj said that where there was increased incidence of corruption and malpractices in the routine working of the government machinery, there would hardly be any investor from outside the country on developmental projects. If corruption went on unchecked in a State, no entrepreneurs from other States would be willing to set up their units in that State as that would affect the peaceful working of the undertakings. As no vigilance officer or police could eradicate corruption single handedly, people should come forward and provide information about the prevalence of corruption. Mr. Selvaraj said at present there was a general trend of people sending in anonymous petitions, which for all practical purposes were aimed at affecting the character of individuals. Such petitions would not serve any purpose. He said that the holding of awareness week should not be a mere annual ritual. It should be taken seriously. He also stressed that transparency in the working of the departments would always ensure that there was little room for corruption to creep in.
