SRINAGAR: In one of the shortest encounters with a suicide squad here on Wednesday, the Central Reserve Police Force gunned down two militants when they tried to sneak into their camp in Hawal area of Srinagar downtown. However, the CRPF lost three of its jawans in the attack. According to police, the militants launched an attack on the Firdous Cinema, a defunct cinema theatre, which is being occupied by security forces for the last 15 years. They lobbed a grenade and opened indiscriminate fire before taking cover behind a passenger bus.The militants targeted the sentry at the gate before sneaking into the complex. A guard was killed. Militants engaged the forces in a gun battle in which five CRPF soliders were injured. Two died later in the hospital. Both the militants were killed before they could enter the building. "They were neutralised in just 15 minutes. But we lost three jawans," an official said. The entire area was cordoned off and a search operation launched. A bomb disposal squad was also pressed into service. No militant outfit has owned the responsibility for the attack.
