Harika misses bronze

NEW DELHI: D. Harika who was tied up for the third place, ended up fifth due to inferior tiebreak score in the World junior chess championship in Istanbul on Tuesday.

Harika drew with eventual champion Germany's Elisabeth Paehtz in the 13th round to finish with 9 points behind Elisabeth (10) and China's Gu Xiaobing (9.5). Later, Poland's Beata Kadziolka and Azerbaijan's Turkan Mamdjarova won their matches to match Harika's tally. Since the average of Beata's opponents was more than that of Turkan and Harika, she took the third spot.

Final standings (leading names and Indians):

Girls: 1. Elisabeth, 2. Gu Xiabong, 3-5. Beata, Turkan and Harika. 14. Tania, 25-26. Kruttika and Eesha. 60. Raghavi.
