PONDICHERRY: Karaikal district has recorded 89.5 cm rainfall since the beginning of the month. The district received 3.5 cm rainfall for the 24 hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. This is an unprecedented record of showers for the district. Normally, the whole northeast monsoon spread over October to December would bring 70 cm rainfall for the district. This time it was more than usual (89.5 cm in three weeks). Though most of the areas were inundated in the previous spell (November 1 to 10) the floodwater had receded now. A source in the Public Works department in Karaikal said the causeway across the Arasalar, which was only a temporary structure for movement of traffic, was washed away because of heavy flow. Steps were taken to restore it for pedestrian and two-wheeler movement.
