Action plan on 24-hour water supply drawn up

All corporations and municipalities to be covered in three years


HYDERABAD: An ambitious action plan to supply round-the-clock drinking water in all municipal corporations and municipalities in the State during the next three years has been finalised by the State Government at a cost of Rs. 12,000 crores.

Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao told reporters here on Wednesday as part of the `Samachar Sravanthi' programme that Rs. 6,500 crores would be spent in the municipal areas to improve the drinking water supply and another Rs. 5,500 crores was earmarked for Hyderabad city.

Municipal officials were preparing an action plan to complete the project in the next three years. The Government plans to raise the current daily supply of 1,235 Million Litres Day (MLD) to 1,750 MLD by 2009, he added.

In all, 54 water supply schemes were taken up with an outlay of Rs. 580 crores, of which 17 were completed while the remaining would be ready by the end of December. Three desalination plants have been proposed at Bapatla, Bheemunipatnam and Chirala at a cost of Rs. 34.28 crores.

Solid waste

Mr. Ranga Rao said that for scientific management of municipal solid waste, the Government had decided to constitute `AP Integrated Solid Waste Management Board' with the Chief Minister as Chairman.

A sum of Rs. 774 crores would be spent on disposal of solid waste in all municipal corporations and municipalities.

As part of the National Slum Development Programme aimed at integrated development of slum areas in municipalities, Rs. 25.60 crores was spent to provide CC roads, drains, water tap connections, which benefited 12,981 slum dwellers.

For the year 2005-06, an amount of Rs. 40.39 crores would be spent on the same activities. He also announced new Street Vendors' Policy to provide supportive environment for livelihood of street vendors.
