Naxal killed in

exchange of fire

VISAKHAPATNAM: A Maoist was killed and a reserve Sub-Inspector was critically injured during an exchange of fire between the police and naxalites near Sikupalem village under the limits Koyyuru-Mampa police station on Wednesday. The Maoist, who died on the spot, was yet to be identified. The injured SI was being rushed to Narsipatnam. A SBBL gun, camera flash, battery re-charger and some kits were recovered from the encounter site. - Staff Reporter

Police unearth 14 landmines

ADILABAD: The police parties engaged in the anti-naxalite operations in the Jogapur forest area of Kagaznagar mandal have recovered 14 landmines planted on the road between Manepalli and Sarkepalli villages.

The landmines were meant apparently to attack the police parties passing on the road, according to Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela.

Contract worker dies in freak accident

VISAKHAPATNAM: In a freak mishap, a contract worker of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant was crushed to death on Tuesday.

Steel Plant Police Circle Inspector B.V. Ramana Murthy said on Wednesday that Korada Reddy, 27, died when a belt fell on him while picking up fallen ore in the raw material handling plant (RMHP) during `B' shift. Murthy was rushed to Steel General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. - Staff Reporter

YSR, Naidu wish KCR speedy recovery

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday enquired about the health of Union Labour Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao who is admitted to AIIMS, New Delhi, after fracturing his leg.

T. Harish Rao, nephew of the Minister, told The Hindu that Dr. Reddy and Mr. Naidu telephoned the TRS chief and wished him a speedy recovery.

Rebel TRS legislators - M. Satyanarayana Reddy and K. Laxma Reddy - too telephoned the party president and enquired about his health. - Special Correspondent

Tribals for regularisation of land

ADILABAD: A large number of tribals from across the agency areas in Adilabad district marched under the banner of Adivasi Aikya Vedika to the Collectorate demanding regularisation of land under cultivation by individual families. They submitted application forms to Joint Collector A. Dinakar Babu to put forward claims to the land under their occupation.

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the State High Court on Tuesday gave two weeks time to the Secretary, Law, to report about the steps taken to set up courts in agency, Scheduled tribal areas on permanent basis.

Inspects stadium works

KARIMNAGAR: Collector C. Parthasarathi inspected the on-going works at the Ambedkar stadium complex in the town on Wednesday.

Sangareddy: A Magisterial inquiry into the death of a prisoner Kandi Balaiah during remand will take place at the RDO office here on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Nellore: Interviews for candidates eligible for Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana will be held at Nellore on November 29.

ONGOLE: Prakasam district received widespread rainfall in the last two days under the influence of low pressure area over Bay of Bengal. It received an average of 39.9 mm rainfall till now as against the normal 143.7 mm for the month of November. Srikakulam: Unable to bear financial problems, T. Appa Rao (35) of Bhagirathapuram village in Etcherla mandal committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday. In another case in Brahmanatarla village D. Premakumari committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan on Tuesday night. According to the police she ended her life because of unbearable stomach pain. Special Correspondent

Rajahmundry: The old copies of popular local Telugu daily `Samacharam' will be digitalised by the Andhra Pradesh Press Academy. D. Amar, chairman, has agreed to make CDs of the old newspaper, which was established in 1956. Staff Reporter.

Revival of bank

ADILABAD: Adilabad District Cooperative Central Bank (DCCB) chairman K. Premsagar Rao on Tuesday promised to revive the bank by rectifying its financial irregularities. He said private audit of the bank's accounts would be done in January.

At a press conference, Mr. Premsagar Rao warned DCCB officials of stringent action if they did not rectify the mistakes in financial aspects before the end of the year. He said advances of Rs. 18 crores had been found to be not properly accounted for. - Staff Reporter

One suspected

naxal killed

WARANGAL: One person allegedly belonging to the Prathighatana group of naxals was killed in an exchange of fire with the police near Velair village of Dharmasagar mandal here on Wednesday.

According to the police, on information that a group of naxals were extorting money, the police launched vehicle-checking operations in several villages of Dharmasagar mandal. Around 8.30 pm, the police intercepted a two-wheeler. When they tried to stop the vehicle, two persons travelling on the motorcycle opened fire at the police. The police retaliated.

The police found two 9 mm pistols and letterheads of Prathighatana group from the deceased. - Staff Reporter
