15,000 marriages

in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The city's infrastructure, already creeking under the load of parties in the on-going `wedding season', was severely strained with an estimated 15,000 marriage functions on Wednesday evening.

Traffic jams were witnessed across the Capital due to inadequate number of proper wedding venues and parkings.

Conference on classroom project

NEW DELHI: Delhi Public School R.K.Puram is organising a three-day conference, "DPSMUN-2005", at India Habitat Centre here beginning this Sunday.

Part of "The Global Classroom Project" of the United Nations Association of the US, the conference will focus on issues like food security, cooperation among troop-contributing countries, sustainable development, women's reproductive health, besides trafficking of wild flora and fauna.

Cricket match for

HIV cause

NEW DELHI: The Delhi State AIDS Control Society is organising a cricket match at the Jamia Millia Islamia sports complex here this Sunday in which people with HIV/AIDS, veteran cricketers and doctors will participate.

The match, to be played between 11-30 a.m. and 2 p.m., will drive home the message that people living with HIV/AIDS deserve to be integrated into society so that they can lead dignified lives. Former cricketers including Bishan Singh Bedi, Surendra Khanna, Chetan Chauhan and Ajay Jadeja are expected to participate in the match.

Bid to check dengue

NEW DELHI: To discuss measures to check the spread of dengue in the Capital, Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri chaired a meeting of senior officials on Wednesday. Stating that nine cases of dengue had been reported on Wednesday, of which one each were from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, Mr. Shastri said 943 cases had been reported so far in the Capital this year.

As part of the steps taken to prevent the spread of the disease, the Health Department claims to have collected 19,758 blood slides, sprayed 12,0467 houses and inspected 67,9020 houses for breeding of mosquitoes.

Disaster management

NEW DELHI: Stating that the Capital is located in an earthquake-prone area (Zone IV), Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday stressed the need for greater awareness about disaster management.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a national seminar on "Role of Helicopters in Disaster Management", Ms. Dikshit said in recent years natural disasters like the cyclone in Orissa and the earthquake in Bhuj had underlined the need for helicopters in disaster management. The Government, she added, would construct helipads in some schools.
