Flood situation grim: boy washed away

200 tanks on the brink of breach; record 22.9 cm rainfall in Tirumala



TEMPLE TOWN MAROONED: A street in Tiruchanur was inundated on Wednesday following torrential rain.

TIRUPATI: With no let-up in the torrential rain, flood situation in Tirupati division continued to be grim on Wednesday. Five tanks in and around Tirupati breached and another 200 are on the verge of breach in the division with heavy rain lashing the temple town for the third consecutive day under the influence of a cyclonic storm in the Bay.

With swirling water entering 18 colonies, the revenue authorities evacuated 1,120 persons to safer places. A boy Gopinadh (3) was reportedly washed away as water gushed through STV Nagar. The town and its suburbs received 7 cm of rainfall while Tirumala recorded an unprecedented 22.9 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours. According to Chittoor district Collector, six villages in the Tirupati division were cut off. In all, 25 houses collapsed and 86 were partly damaged. Water level in Kalyani dam in the upstream of Tirupati is fast rising. Tiruchanur temple town situated on the banks of the Swarnamukhi is inundated. Oteru tank, near Tiruchanur, overflowed leaving about 200 houses in knee-deep water.

Boulders on ghat road

Tirumala Staff Reporter adds: According to TTD meteorological observatory senior officer D.S. Dikshitulu, the previous highest rainfall of 20.1 cm was recorded on June 14, 1996. Normal life was paralysed while vehicular traffic thrown out of gear on the second ghat road. There were huge boulders on the ghat road as landslips continued. At several places, uprooted trees fell across on the road forcing the TTD authorities to open the link road.

Nellore hit badly

Heavy rain disrupted normal life in south Andhra areas, especially Nellore and Chittoor districts.
