ALAPPUZHA: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has opined that the Central and the State Governments had faltered in acting promptly in the issue of abduction and execution of the Malayali Border Roads Organisation employee, Ramankutty Maniappan, by the Taliban in Afghanistan. He told presspersons, in the house of Maniappan at Chingoli, on Wednesday evening, after consoling the parents and wife of the victim, that the Centre should have frozen the activities of the Border Roads Organisation in Afghanistan temporarily and initiated a dialogue with the Taliban in the wake of the abduction. He said such a process would have saved Maniappan's life. The Union and the State governments handled the grave issue lightly. Chief minister Oommen Chandy should have shown the sagacity to sent a Minister to Delhi to coordinate the activities to save Maniappan. The Centre should have established contacts with the Taliban and kept constant touch with them. Nothing was done, and that finally lead to the present disaster, he said.
