THRISSUR: Purushothaman and Bhaskaran struck a hat-trick each as Satyabhama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, blanked Thiruvalluvar University (Vellore) 7-0 in the South Zone inter-university football championship, hosted by the Kerala Agricultural University at the Veterinary College Ground, Mannuthy, on Wednesday. Vinod scored the other goal. In another match of the preliminary knockout event, Anna University (Chennai) defeated Karnatak (Dharvad) 2-0. The top four teams of the preliminary round will meet last year's semifinalists - Annamalai (Chidambaram), Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram), Calicut (Kozhikode) and Bangalore - in the quarterfinals which begin on September 26. The semifinal league, which decides the champion, will be played from November 28 to 30.
Sub-junior hockey
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 26th sub-junior hockey championship will get underway at the TKM Public School, Kollam on Friday. Twelve teams will take part in the three-day championship organised by the Kollam District Hockey Association. N. Ramesh Kolappa, the secretary of the Kerala Hockey Association, said players born on or after 1-1-1990 are eligible to take part in the tournament. The participating teams have been divided into four pools with the pool winner qualifying for the knockout semifinals. The semifinals and final will be played on November 27. The groups: Pool A: Thiruvananthapuarm, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta; Pool B: Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kottayam; Pool C: Kannur, Kasaragod and Thrissur; Pool D: Kollam, Wynad and Idukki.
Asian table tennis
NEW DELHI: Leading countries like China, Japan and Korea have confirmed their participation for the 17th Asia Cup table tennis championship to be played at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here from December 18 to 20. Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, DPR Korea, Malaysia, Qatar, Iran, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam are the other countries that have confirmed their entry. The tournament will carry a total prize money of $20,000. India had hosted the prestigious championship in 1984, 1996, 1997 and 2000.
