Boulder falls on track near Ambatturai, trains delayed

Staff Reporter

Rain hampers work to restore traffic, passengers stranded

MADURAI: A huge boulder fell on the track near the Ambatturai station in the Madurai Division on Wednesday, disrupting traffic on the busy Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil corridor.

All Chennai-bound trains from the south were detained in different stations.

While the Madurai-Chennai Pandyan Express and the Tuticorin-Mysore Express were detained in Madurai, the Tirunelveli-Chennai Egmore Nellai Express was regulated at Virudhunagar. The Madurai-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, the Kanyakumari-Hazrat Nizammuddin Thirukkural Express, the Kanyakumari-Chennai Egmore Express, the Tuticorin-Chennai Egmore Pearl City Express and the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Egmore Ananthapuri Express were also regulated.

Special trains

"We have rushed relief teams, with cranes, to restore traffic at the earliest. The boulder is huge, and it may take a few hours before the section is cleared for traffic. The passengers of the Chennai Egmore-Madurai Vaigai Express are being accommodated in the Palaghat-Madurai meter gauge passenger," Divisional Railway Manager B.N. Rajasekhar told The Hindu .

Efforts were on to operate MG special trains between Madurai and Dindigul to move stranded passengers. Incessant rain hampered restoration works. "Boulders falling on track is common on this stretch, since the broad gauge track takes an alignment cutting through a mountain. We have deployed special teams to monitor the track round the clock," a senior official said.
