`U.K. varsities keen on research links'

More interactive programmes likely to be organised in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Universities in the United Kingdom would like to do collaborative research with institutions in India, including Coimbatore region, A.J. Solomon, Manager, Education Projects (South India), British Council, Chennai, said here on Tuesday.

On a visit to Coimbatore in connection with the `Education UK Festival', Mr. Solomon told The Hindu that the universities were in favour of sharing knowledge and establishing professional networks.

Taking into account the large number of engineering institutions in the region, the British Council and the British High Commission had jointly organised a one-day seminar on engineering education at PSG College of Technology, in association with the Sterling Group, U.K., a consortium of 23 research-led universities.

Technical sessions

Engineering faculty, industry representatives and research students attended the seminar, which had two technical sessions and a panel discussion on industry-institute partnership.

He said that the speakers were Kenneth William Dalgarno, Senior Lecturer in Design and Manufacture, School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds; Tom Markvart, Reader in Electronic Materials, Engineering Materials Research Group, School of Engineering Sciences, University of Southampton; and Christopher Sutcliffe, Lecturer, Department of Engineering, University of Liverpool.

More programmes were likely to be organised in Coimbatore.

He said that the British Council Library at Chennai had been given a new look and additional facilities. Larger numbers of talented Indian students, ought to apply for various scholarships available in the U.K.
