ERODE: Normal life has been affected in Erode district for the second day on Thursday due to heavy rain. Two to three feet of water is flowing on almost all the streets in Erode, Dharapuram and Perundurai.

Following sudden breach in the Kalingarayan canal at Thoppupalayam near Kodumudi, water entered 150-odd houses, including the local school. The Perumpallam Odai (stream) was flooded and on Jeevanandham Road, water was seen flowing over the bridge. Water entered over 500 houses on Jeevanandham Road, Asokapurai and Pudumai Colony.

On Thursday due to breach in the jungle stream in Kollampalayam area, flood water entered houses on Kattabhomman Street.

The Nallathangal Odai, which flowed in the Moolanure area, breached following which floodwater entered over 100 houses in Karaiyur and Goundenvalasu villages. The inmates were shifted to safer places and police pickets posted in the area. Public Works Department officials said that all the 510 ponds and 46 tanks had filled up in the recent rain.

Shops closed

For the second day, Bazaar Street wore a deserted look. Many textile, grocery and jewellery shops remained closed. Because of the closure of drains in Erode town, rainwater was flowing on the roads.

In many places, plastic sheets, cups and bags stagnated water in the drains.
