`Let children talk'

COIMBATORE: Developing communication skills in children will lead to a positive adult-child relationship, improve self-esteem, self-confidence and help them lead a pleasant life, was the observation made at a workshop on `Developing communication skills in children based on their readiness and value education through games'.

It was conducted recently by the Indian Association for Pre-School Education, Coimbatore Branch, in association with the Department of Human Development, Avinashilingam Deemed University.

Communication development could be achieved by letting the children imitate parents and family members, correcting their mistakes, answering questions and clarifying doubts, said Jayapoorni, Reader, Department of Human Development of the UniversityRespecting them by answering their questions would also help.

Storytelling

G. Baradha, also with the Department, spoke on the importance of storytelling for developing communication skills.

He said stories led to vocabulary building, understanding concepts and increasing memory power. Forty-five persons from Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur attended the workshop.
