Rain lashes Dharmapuri

The district demands Rs. 28.40 crores as flood relief

Dharmapuri: Heavy rain lashed various parts of Dharmapuri for the second consecutive day here on Thursday with Pappireddipatti recording a high of 130 mm. The average rainfall recorded in other areas in the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday is as follows: Dharmapuri 70 mm, Harur 79.8 mm, Palacode 47 mm and Pennagaram 38.8 mm.

The Athimutlu Bridge was completely submerged in the rain.

As a result road traffic to Dharmapuri has been diverted through Palacode and Maarandahalli. A section of the Bommidi-Pappireddipatti road was washed away. The villages of Kalipettai, Nadupatti and Varadhagoundanur in Pappireddipatti taluk remained waterlogged. Water supply to Dharmapuri town has also been suspended following a break in the main drinking water pipeline at Athimutlu in Palacode taluk.

Collector M. Chandrasekaran visited the spot and ordered Municipal officials to restore drinking water supply to Dharmapuri town at the earliest.

In Krishnagiri

The average rainfall recorded in Krishnagiri is as follows: Nedungal 62.4 mm, Uthangkarai 54.8 mm, Krishnagiri 34.8 mm, Pocchampalli 46 mm, Barur 43 mm, Bengondapuram 42.4 mm, Denkanikottai 34 mm, Thally 24.4 mm, Rayakottai 14 mm, Anchetti 17 mm, Shoolagiri 26 mm and Hosur 25 mm.

A total of 32 houses in Kuruvinayanapalli near Krishnagiri were damaged in the rain.

Proposal

The district administration has sent a proposal to the State Government to undertake restoration of damages to houses, highway bridges, panchayat union tanks, road bridges and culverts in Dharmapuri at an outlay of Rs. 28.40 crores, said Collector M. Chandrasekaran here on Wednesday.

Because of heavy rain, agricultural crops, irrigation tanks, highway bridges, canals, thatched huts and other properties near the Nagavathi dam, Panchapalli dam, Kumarichetti tank, Chinnapalli, Palacode, Pennagaram and Maarandahalli were severely damaged.

A report on the extent of damage to crops and properties in the district had already been submitted to the Central team.

Mr. Chandrasekaran said Rs. 19.78 crores was immediately required to repair rain battered roads.

The Collector said Rs. 2.61 crores was needed to repair damages to irrigation tanks, canals, panchayat union and PWD tanks, Rs. 2.23 crores for houses and other property, Rs. 1.5 crores for drinking water supply and Rs. 40,000 for crop damages.
