Fall in crime rate, number of accidents, says SP

Staff Reporter

`The recovery rate has increased to 83 per cent this year'

ERODE: The crime rate as well as the number of accidents has decreased in the district, the Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan, has said.

Talking to newsmen on Thursday, he said during October 2004, 78 criminal cases were reported, but during the corresponding period this year, it had come down to 42 due to intensive patrolling by the police.

The Superintendent of Police said the recovery rate had increased to 83 per cent this year. He advised the residents to install alarm systems in their houses. Four or five households can jointly install a system. If anybody tried to tamper with the lock, the alarm will go off automatically alerting the people nearby. Regarding traffic violations, he said day-by-day the number of fatal accidents was decreasing, but violations continue. Minidor autos, which were meant for carrying goods, were being used for transporting public, which was an offence.

Rules violation

Giving details about cases booked for rules violation, he said within 10 months more than 7,500 cases were booked. Of this, 5,284 were for over-speeding and 2,127 were for other traffic violations, including drunken-driving. In addition, the traffic and local police had registered cases against persons who used cell phones while riding two-wheelers. A total of 614 cases had been registered this month against persons who used cell phones while riding. Fine ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 was imposed on them.

The police administration was taking all efforts to minimise traffic congestion and accidents, he said. With the help of sponsors, 1.50 lakh black spots were pasted on four and two wheelers and more would be pasted soon. Caution boards had been placed in important points and the SP urged the public to follow rules to avert accidents.
