SHGs to collect tax arrears

Staff Reporter

This exercise has been initially introduced in Palayamkottai zone; to be expanded to other areas also

TIRUNELVELI: For the first time in the State, the Tirunelveli Corporation has started involving self-help groups in collecting tax arrears as the civic body could not collect outstanding taxes to the tune of over Rs. 25 crores.

"Though we could have initiated distraint proceedings against defaulters straightaway, we do not want to do it. We want to maintain cordial relationship with everyone living under the jurisdiction of Corporation so that we have roped in SHGs to collect tax arrears.

As SHGs know very well the problems of the people and the commitments of the Corporation, they can effectively persuade the public to pay tax arrears," said the Mayor, A. Jayarani and the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, after inaugurating the first tax collection exercise by SHGs at South Bazar in Palayamkottai amidst incessant drizzle on Thursday.

Holding placards, the SHG members meet the public and the shopkeepers to pay the tax arrears immediately to avoid distraint proceedings, legal actions and extrication of drinking water connection.

Though this exercise has been initially introduced at Palayamkottai zone, it will be expanded to other areas also, it is learnt.

The Executive Engineer (Planning), Narayanan Nair, and the Assistant Engineer, Melapalayam Zone, Karuppasamy, participated.
