CHENNAI: "Good morning!" chirrups the voice at the other end of the line, never mind that it's late evening. One has to make excuses for rocker Subir Malik whose Delhi-based band Parikrama recently made a single for Microsoft.
"Start me up"
They approached the band to make a song for the launch of three softwares to be released by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates on December 9 in Bangalore. They previously paid $ 12 millions to secure the rights to the opening chords of Rolling Stones hit "Start Me Up" when they launched Windows 95. As for Parikrama's song, "it's a good amount of money", is all Subir will say. His brother Nitin, the band vocalist, wrote the lyrics of the song in five days and they made the song in a day. It's called `Superhero' and it's about the life of a programmer. Was it tough, considering a rocker and a software programmer can't have much in common? "No, I think most programmers live the life of a rockstar wake up to Pink Floyd on their computers, dream of riding Harley Davidsons, and live a jeans-and-T-shirt kinda life," says Subir. And then he confesses he doesn't know a single programmer personally. "The guys at Microsoft have been so helpful. They sent us 10 pages about programmers." At the official launch, Parikrama will perform the song live. "We'll be sharing the stage with Bill Gates... I haven't decided what I'll say to him but I will definitely give him a Parikrama CD," says Subir. At Palace Grounds in Bangalore, 5,000 Microsoft employees will rock to the chorus that goes "Opens all the Windows, as he shuts the door... "

`Superhero' will also be available for free download at www.microsoft.com/India.
