Welfare scheme for families having only girl children

Rs. 15,000 financial assistance to the family will be given

Pondicherry: The Union Territory Administration has evolved a scheme to generate awareness among parents about having girl children and also to raise the status of such children in families and a financial assistance of Rs. 15,000 to the family having only one girl child born on or after April 1, 2005 would be handed in the form of fixed deposit.

A notification in the State gazette which effects the amendment to the Rules for grant of incentive to the family having one girl child and parents having accepted family planning scheme stated that Rs. 15,000 would be deposited in fixed account in a bank or in a suitable post office savings scheme in the name of the girl child. Where the family had two girl children Rs. 7,500 would be deposited in the name of each child and maturity value of the deposit would be given to the girl child or the two children on their attaining 18 years of age. The mother is the guardian for the minor child's account. Where the mother predeceases the girls' father he would be guardian for the account.

The purpose of the scheme is to promote small family norms.
