Unemployment allowance programme introduced

Special Correspondent

Scheme to benefit insured persons with effect from April 1, 2005

Pondicherry: The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) here has introduced `unemployment allowance' to benefit `insured persons' going out of insurable employment involuntarily with effect from April 1 this year.

Regional Director of the Corporation, Y.M. Parate said in a release on Thursday that the scheme named Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana was meant to cover those going out of insurable employment on account of closure of a factory or establishment, retrenchment or permanent invalidity arising out of non-employment injury, after having been in insurable employment and contributed under the ESI scheme for five or more years.

Mr. Parate said that the allowance was payable for a maximum period of six months at the standard benefit area. Those eligible for the benefit could contact the Regional Director or the Branch Manager in the covered area to have further details and guidelines to make claim for the allowance with necessary documentary evidence.

The Regional Director said that there would also be a seminar on the subject on November 25 and 30 and again on December 6 and December 15 to bring to focus the highlights of the scheme and its benefits. The Regional Director requested the employers and the leaders of the trade unions to make use of the opportunity.

He also said that the Corporation was extending full medical care to the insured population of the Pondicherry region who were covered by the Corporation along with their family members.

Cash assistance was also being provided whenever they were on certified abstention for illness, employment injury or for maternity reasons during their employment period.
