CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has asked ministers to visit the districts affected by floods for overseeing relief and restoration work. Officials of the Public Works, Highways and Revenue departments were attending to restoration work on a war footing, an official release said. Breaches in tanks, lakes and supply channels were being plugged and strengthening of tank and river bunds had been taken up. Water level in reservoirs was being monitored and regulated. The release said Collectors had geared up the administrative machinery to face the situation arising out of the unprecedented rain. People in low-lying areas had been moved to safer places and relief centres opened in all the affected areas. Education Minister C.Ve. Shanmugham will go to Cuddalore, Labour Minister P. Annavi to Tiruchi, Food Minister V. Jayaraman to Nagapattinam, Health Minister N. Thalavai Sundaram to Villupuram, Public Works Minister O. Panneerselvam to Madurai, Industries Minister Nainar Nagenthiran to Sivaganga, Fisheries Minister M. Radhakrishnan to Pudukottai, Dairy Development Minister S. Ramachandran to Tiruvarur, Social Welfare Minister Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy to Salem, Transport Minister R. Viswanathan to Dindigul and Information Minister K.P. Anbalagan to Perambalur, to monitor relief operations, the release said. Senior IAS officers are also being sent to the affected districts to assist the Collectors.
