Heavy rain forecast

CHENNAI: Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry during the next 36 hours, according to a weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological department here on Thursday. The well marked low pressure area moved westwards and emerged into southeast Arabian Sea.

Heavy rain continued to lash Tamil Nadu throughout Thursday as the northeast monsoon has been vigorous over Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Panruti in Cuddalore district received the highest rainfall of 32 cm, followed by Kallakurichi in Villupuram district 31cm, Sholavandan (Madurai ) 29 cm, Virudhunagar 28 cm, Palani 27 cm, Dindigul 26 cm, Thanjavur and Vallam 25 cm each, Perambalur 24 cm, and Tirukattupalli (Thanjavur dt), Viralimalai (Pudukottai dt), Karur, Lalgudi and Musiri (Tiruchirapalli dt) 20 each. Various towns in the State received heavy to very heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, the bulletin added. — Special Correspondent

Young World painting contest

CHENNAI: The Hindu - Young World on-the-spot painting competition 2005 finals for juniors (Classes 1V to VII) and seniors (Classes VIII to X) will be held in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi on Sunday (November 27).

All those selected in the preliminary round have been sent individual call letters to come for the finals. The contest will start at 9 a.m. and the participants should reach the designated venue at least half an hour ahead of time, with the call letter. Prizes will be awarded to the winners the same afternoon. Aside from the first, second and third prizes, there will be some consolation prizes and certificates for all participants. — Special Correspondent

NABARD aid for tanks modernisation

CHENNAI: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned projects costing Rs. 242.10 crores under the rural infrastructure development fund to Tamil Nadu. This includes RIDF assistance of Rs. 204.64 crores by the NABARD. The balance will be met by the State Government at its meeting on Monday.

The bank said the projects sanctioned included modernisation of 96 irrigation tanks in 16 districts, execution of safety measures for 11 dams and irrigation projects in 11 districts, micro irrigation projects to provide assistance to farmers through propagation of drip irrigation in 29 districts and construction of 3,699 new classrooms in Government high schools and higher secondary schools. — Special Correspondent

Special buses to Sabarimala

CHENNAI: In connection with Sabarimala pilgrimage, the State Express Transport Corporation is operating special buses to Pamba from Chennai, Pondicherry, Madurai, and Tenkasi from November 25 to January 14. Advance reservation is available for the buses.

Apart from the above for the benefit of group of pilgrims, the Corporation is also providing buses on hire to Pamba and Kumili, says a corporation release. — Special Correspondent

Kalamassery bus burning: bail rejected

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday dismissed a bail petition filed by Sherief, the first accused, in the burning of the Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation bus at Kalamassery on September 9. According to the prosecution, Sherief along with other accused hijacked the bus at gunpoint at 9.30 p.m. and set it ablaze after forcibly making the passengers alight.

The bus was burnt to protest the prolonged detention of Abdul Nazar Maudhani, PDP leader.— Staff Reporter

Firemen selection tests postponed

THANJAVUR: Physical tests to be held to select firemen by the Fire Service and Rescue Department here on Thursday have been postponed due to rain.

The tests will be held at Annai Sathya Stadium on November 27 at 6 a.m., a police press release issued here on Thursday said.

Holiday for schools

KARUR: A holiday has been declared for all educational institutions in Karur district on Friday. A holiday has been declared in all schools in Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts.

Trains cancelled

TIRUCHI: With the two minor bridges between Kattur and Pullampadi being washed away on Thursday, the Southern Railway has cancelled the Tiruchi - Chennai - Tiruchi Pallavan Expresses and Madurai - Chennai - Madurai Vaigai Expresses on November 25 (Friday).

A railway spokesman here said on Thursday night that the Guruvayur - Chennai Express, which left Guruvayur on Thursday night, was cancelled between Madurai and Chennai.

Farmers' grievance day meeting cancelled

THANJAVUR: The monthly farmers' grievances day meeting that was scheduled on November 25 has been cancelled, while in Nagapattinam the meeting is being postponed in the wake of heavy rain in the district.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.13 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 18,337 cusecs and the outflow 21,983 cusecs.

Held on assault charge

Tuticorin: The police have arrested Bhagat Ali (33) on a charge of assaulting Alifatima (37) at Arumuganeri on November 21.

They said the accused trespassed into her house and hit her with an iron rod due to personal differences. She was admitted to the Kayalpattinam Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter Hunt for youth

Tuticorin: The police are on the look out for Pandi, who abused a woman at Nehruji Nagar at Mullakadu near here on Wednesday.

Police said the accused hit Muthu Essaki (7), who is dumb, with a cycle. While the girl's mother questioned him, he teased her and abused her in filthy language.

A case was registered under Section 4 of Prevention of Women Harassment Act. — Staff Reporter

Madurai Kamaraj varsity contact classes

MADURAI : The Directorate of Distance Education, Madurai Kamaraj University, will conduct contact classes at the Madura College here on Nov. 26 and 27 for under-graduate first year students. In a press release here, N.M. Ganesan, Deputy Director of DDE, said the classes would be conducted on the same dates at St. Anro Girls Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram for first year UG students.

Smuggled rice seized

ERODE: The Civil Supplies flying squad seized 21 bags of rice meant for supply through ration shops in Pariyur.

A press release on Thursday said the officials during routine check stopped a minidor auto on Athani-Gobi main road near Pariyur. During check, 21 bags of ration rice kept concealed inside the auto was detected and seized.

A case was registered against the auto driver.
