Muslim students denied instruction in mother-tongue: NGO

  • Norms flouted on appointment of Urdu teachers in 12 mandals of West Godavari
  • No response to parents' petition to MEO in Chebrole
  • Signature campaign for creation of language teacher posts planned

ELURU: The Government's claims on promotion of the Urdu language in schools seems to remain on paper if the outcome of a survey conducted in various schools in West Godavari district by the Andhra Regional Urdu Development Society, a non-governmental organisation, is any indication.

Scores of Muslim students in primary schools in the district are denied education in their mother tongue owing to lack of Urdu teachers.

    The guidelines

Consequently, they were forced to have education in Telugu, the society president Md Zikriya said.

As per the Government guidelines, Urdu teacher posts should be created in all elementary schools wherever the number of Muslim students was more than 20.

But the survey revealed that none of the schools in 12 mandals in the district had Urdu teacher in spite of having adequate strength of Muslim students, Mr Zikriya said.

In Chebrole, parents of Muslim students petitioned the Mandal Education Officer last year on the need to provide a Urdu teacher in the local school which had 35 students of the community. But there had been no response yet, he added.

    Memo to YSR

Mr Zikria said their organisation was planning to launch a signature campaign for creation of Urdu teacher posts in all eligible schools. The society would get the parents of Muslim students to sign a memorandum to the Chief Minister on the issue.
