Sivaganga: More than 180 tanks, including 160 PWD tanks, breached and at least 50 villages and residential colonies were marooned in the unprecedented rain that lashed different parts of Sivaganga district for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. Devakottai, Tiruppattur, Kalayarkovil, Sarugani and Karaikudi were among the worst-affected by heavy rain and flash floods. Devakottai and Tiruppattur received a rainfall of 130 mm and 114.2 mm respectively in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. While almost all tanks were full after Tuesday's rain and as the wet spell continued on Wednesday also 184 tanks breached.
Flash flood
In flash flood in Sarugani area of Devakottai taluk 14 villages, including Sarugani, Nagamathi Colony, Palanivayal, Alamkottai, Lewel Nagar, Thiruvalluvar, MGR Nagar were marooned on Tuesday night. Official sources said the first breach occurred at Sarugani. Following this 11 more connecting tanks, including Alambakottai, Thirani, Vellikatttai and Naduveerai, also breached one after the other. On information, people of nearby villages and Revenue authorities rescued the residents and provided them shelter at a church and a school building at Sarugani. Fire Service personnel, who were pressed into service immediately, rescued a few villagers and cattle. Many houses collapsed in the flash flood. Thondi-Madurai road remained cut off due to soil erosion at Sarugani. Similarly, Karaikudi - Madurai road was also badly damaged. A 50-year-old man was killed at Karaikudi when he fell into a tank accidentally. The Collector, Anand Patil, told The Hindu that so far breaches had been plugged in 121 tanks. Efforts were underway to plug the breaches in other tanks also.
