Centre could have done more: Kerala MPs

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Members of Parliament from Kerala on Thursday told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that enough had not been done by the Government to secure the safe release of the slain Border Roads Organisation employee Ramankutty Maniappan.

Dr. Singh told them that the Government had done whatever was possible. He said there was nothing more the Centre could have done than working with the Afghan Government. "The Government had been in continuous touch with all authorities in Kabul." Further, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai told him on Wednesday that his Government had done everything possible.

Dr. Singh sought to impress upon the delegation that the killing of Maniappan by the Taliban was a "national tragedy'' and should not be politicised.

Earlier in the day, some Kerala MPs — Suresh Kurup, K.S. Manoj and P.C. Thomas — sought to raise the matter in the Lok Sabha but were not allowed, as proper notice had not been given.
