NEW DELHI: England captain Charlotte Edwards (46) set the tone before the tail-enders put up a resilient show and forced a draw against India in the four-day women's cricket Test at the Jamia ground here on Thursday. Though Edwards held on to one end, wickets fell at regular intervals and an outright win was within India's reach. England was 162 for six in the 83rd over and India had 30 more overs to dismiss the remaining three wickets. England had 10 players in the line-up after Katherine Brunt flew back to London following fracture to her little finger.
Playing for a draw
England resumed at three without loss, chasing a victory target of 311. Though Edwards had optimistically said that three runs an over was all they needed to win the match, the visitors always played for the draw. Edwards and Newton put on 42 runs for the first wicket before Noosheen al-Khadeer broke the opening pair. Noosheen got Claire Taylor soon after and `eve of the match' Jhulan Goswami trapped Edwards leg before to pile up England's worries at 73 for three. With the key Indian spinner, Neetu David, hardly bothering the visitors, Jenny Gunn (32, 172b, 1x4) and Arran Brindle (46, 105b, 4x4, 1x6) put up 73 runs for the fourth wicket.
